The Magaliesberg is literally a stone’s throw from Pretoria and Johannesburg. The range extends from the Pilanesberg and Sun City to a point near Bronkhorstspruit Dam, a distance of 120km through Gauteng and the North West. The highest point near Hekpoort is 1852m and the cable way at Hartbeespoort Dam affords breathtaking Magaliesberg vistas.
These beautiful mountains are a national treasure and in 2015, this ancient range deservedly joined the World Network of Biosphere Reserves accompanying 630 other such reserves worldwide. According to the experts, the Magaliesberg is half the Earth’s age and encompasses the fascinating Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site which is of great importance from both a cultural and archaeological perspective. Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve is home to 90 native species of mammals and a staggering 443 bird species, equivalent to almost half of all bird species in southern Africa!
Vertical adventures abound taking advantage of the steep-sided kloofs for which the Magaliesberg is renowned. There are some awesome abseiling and rock climbing sites and Shelter Rock’s Via Ferrata is unique to Africa! This iron stairway anchored into the cliff face offers a fantastic introduction to rock climbing and requires no experience. Also hugely popular, the 2.5 hour guided canopy tour through the Ysterhout Kloof is both family and eco-friendly!
With a number of rivers bubbling through the Magaliesberg, water activities include fly and trout fishing on the Magalies River and exhilarating river rafting adventures on the Crocodile River. The clear, spring-fed lake at Miracle Waters is an excellent scuba diving and training location with water temperatures a delightful 23-17°C.
Head skywards on an aerial adventure! Hot air balloon safaris launch in Magalies River Valley, the Magalies Gliding Club offers lessons and introductory flights and feel as free as a bird while hang gliding near Brits.
Experience close-up wildlife viewing on a horse riding safari at La Wiida Lodge near Hartbeespoort Dam. Motor sport enthusiasts will love the action-packed quad bike trails in Phaladingwe Nature Reserve in Broederstroom, also an ideal location for team building experiences.
