Stretching from an estuary at De Hoopvlei to the mouth of the Breede River and along rugged shores of the Indian Ocean, De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Overberg region of the Western Cape is famous for its incredible whale watching and for unspoilt nature in a picture perfect setting.

Only a few hours drive from Cape Town, you enter a different world when you drive into this natural area. Managed by Cape Nature and a firm favourite for hikers, cyclists, bird and whale watchers this is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers. De Hoop is home to one of South Africa’s best Slackpacking trails: The Whale Trail. This 54 km route starts in Potberg and includes five overnight stops on the route to Koppie Alleen. The route offers spectacular views with hiking along the coast and across fynbos covered hills.

The neighbouring marine reserve extends 5 km out to sea and conserves a vast and fascinating variety of marine life. Hikers frequently spot southern right, humpback and Bryde’s whales along with dolphins, porpoises and seals.Life on land is equally diverse. De Hoop is home to 86 species of mammals including baboon, caracal, Cape zebra and bontebok. The Mediterranean climate makes the Overberg a great destination all year around, so get your Boots Dirty on an adventure in De Hoop!
