Tsitsikamma National Park Adventures
The Tsitsikamma National Park area has attracted some very professional adventure companies over the past few years and they have created an awesome list of outdoor activities and things to do in the area. In my opinion it is one of the best adventure destinations currently in South Africa. Base yourself here and you will have an endless list of activities for a great family adventure holiday. Tsitsikamma National Park is also home of the world famous Otter Trail, see description below.
The Tsitsikamma National Park is possibly one of the most beautiful places on the planet and, with its rugged coastline, beautiful forests, and amazing rivers and waterfalls, it’s also an adventure paradise.
Go snorkeling or scuba diving in the sea at the Storms River Mouth with Untouched Adventures, or kayak up the beautiful, deep, black gorge where you can look up between the rugged vertical cliffs at a thin sliver of sky.
Hike along the coast from the SANParks camp to one beautiful B&B after another, or take a slightly more challenging trek through the mountains. You can swing through the trees on a treetop canopy tour with Stormsriver Adventures, or do a zip line slide across the top of a waterfall, go abseiling with Tsitsikamma Forest Adventures or do a quad bike tour of the forest.
Geez, if that’s not enough, do the highest bungee jump in the world. There is just so much to do here, you’ll need at least a week.
THE OTTER TRAIL
This is a challenging 5 day hike between Storm’s River Mouth and Nature’s Valley in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The hike is all along the coastline taking you through valleys, plateaus, across rivers and meanders through forests. It is named after the Cape Clawless Otter which occurs along this coastline, although they are very elusive. Other popular wildlife species more commonly sighted are the Knysna Turacu, dolpins, whales, bushbuck and baboons. The trail only allows 12 people per day, so the huts at each overnight stop include 6 beds in each. There is a communal barbecue area, flush toilet and cold water shower. There is firewood at each hut. The views at each hut are spectacular, either overlooking the ocean or a river mouth. One should be quite fit as it is 43km over rough terrain and exciting river crossings including the Lottering and the infamous Bloukrans river mouth which should preferably be crossed during low tide. The scenery is magnificent and you get a sense of achievements once you have finished this beautiful hike.
Get those boots dirty in the Tsitsikamma National Park.
