Outdoor Education Centre in South Africa. Most of us live in cities – or at least in small settlements where we take for granted many luxuries, the least of which is that we will sleep under a roof. So the great outdoors is challenging. Being out in the wild takes many of us way beyond our comfort zones. And that place where we start feeling a little bit twitchy, the place where we start questioning our wisdom in having moved beyond the front veranda, is where learning takes place.

So that’s why almost every culture in the world has a history of retreating to the wild to learn – whether it’s for the initiation of youths or the revelation of mystic truths to venerable prophets. In the wild we get in touch with our true selves, minus the trappings of civilisation. Well, that’s the theory but, to be honest, most of us take all our urban baggage with us into the wild. And along with the battery-operated hair dryers, we take our urban thinking – at least for the first couple of hours or days.

So a well designed team building or self development course will slowly move us out of that familiar place and get us looking at the world in a different way. And that’s really what it’s all about. So, while it might seem to be just another off-the-wall way to trash the training budget before the end of the financial year, outdoor team building really can increase company morale, start to address staff issues and generally contribute to a strategy to increase productivity. It’s not a panacea for all ills, but it’s a good place to start. And – best of all – it’s fun, too.
