The Raptors Way – Northern Drakensberg
If you’re drawn to wild mountain landscapes and expansive skies, the Raptors Way offers a gentle yet deeply rewarding Northern Berg hiking experience. Designed as a less strenuous alternative to our Amphitheatre route, this 3-day lodge-to-lodge hike lets you immerse yourself in the high foothills of the Drakensberg while enjoying the comfort of fully-catered, cosy mountain lodges, carrying only a light daypack.
The journey begins at the charming Cavern Hotel, nestled at the valley’s end amid indigenous forest. Day one takes you onto the higher ridgeline, with two route options: a more adventurous ascent over Sungubala Mountain, or a gentler contour trail below the sandstone cliffs. The day ends at Drak Mountain Inn, with quaint log cabins and sweeping mountain vistas to enjoy.
On day two, visit a protected colony of Cape and Bearded Vultures — whose effortless flight over the rugged cliffs provides an unforgettable highlight. From there, the trail continues along the ridge with sweeping panoramas and a dramatic viewpoint overlooking Sterkfontein Dam.
The third and final day is a relaxed descent back to the Cavern through montane grassland, seasonal wildflowers, and pockets of indigenous forest alive with birdlife. With expert guiding, vehicle luggage transfers, and top-notch mountain cuisine, the Raptors Way offer the perfect blend of nature, comfort, and adventure.
