Kosi Bay Lakes & Turtle Trails

The Kosi Bay Lakes hike is a journey into one of South Africa’s most secluded and ecologically rich corners — where wetlands, lakes, forest, and ocean meet in a mosaic of wild beauty. Walking here feels like stepping into another world: from giant fern and swamp forests to palm-dotted grasslands and pristine beaches, the diversity of this northernmost tip of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is astonishing.

Each day reveals a new natural or cultural wonder. Watch traditional Thonga fishermen tend their ancient fish traps, glide by boat through serene lake channels, or snorkel in the clear, tropical shallows. Between November and March, the magic deepens as loggerhead and leatherback turtles haul themselves ashore to nest — a sight that leaves few untouched.

Led by experienced local guides, these fully supported slackpacking trails include luggage transfers, catered meals, and return trailhead transfers, allowing you to simply walk and absorb the rhythm of this wilderness. The routes are flexible and varied, making them ideal for families and mixed-ability hikers alike.

For those seeking more beach immersion, the Turtle Trails extend the journey — combining the best of the Kosi Lakes with the untouched splendour of Maputaland’s coastline. The adventure begins at Beach Camp near Kosi Mouth, with a boat passage through the lake system to Bhanga Nek or the tranquil Kosi Forest Lodge, where paddling along the Raffia-lined Siyadla River is a highlight.

From here, you’ll hike along protected shores to Lala Nek, a pristine snorkelling paradise, before ending at Gugs Eco-Lodge — or continuing on the Leatherback trail to Thonga Beach Lodge, for two final nights of barefoot luxury.

Wild beauty, rich culture, and endless adventure — this is coastal slackpacking at its most soulful.
