Pondo-Hopper & Explorer Trails

With its rugged headlands, steep gorges, hidden waterfalls, and pristine estuaries, Pondoland’s Wild Coast remains largely inaccessible — but all the more rewarding for those who explore it. Since 2007, Active Escapes - in close partnership with local guides and communities - has been organising trails in this remarkable region for intrepid walkers, long before it became the destination on every hiker’s radar.

Our signature trails are the fully supported, catered Pondo-Hopper or the self-supported Pondo-Explorer, both following the same route and overnighting in tented camps nestled among the dunes or overlooking estuaries, with a mid-way night at Mbotyi Hotel.

The 5-night Pondo-Hopper runs from Msikaba to Manteku, with two nights at PBC tented camps (Msikaba and Luphuthana), one night at Mbotyi, and two nights at Manteku. It is fully catered and a 4x4-vehicle supported trail - with our dedicated support team, ensuring your bag is transported to the next camp, the beers & G&T’s are chilled, and a freshly prepped dinner is on the simmer. A minimum group of six persons is required and we strive to schedule your preferred dates outside school and public holidays.

The Pondo-Explorer follows the same route but is self-supported and self-catered, with the option of porters, or vehicle luggage transfers (for larger groups), who wish to lighten their load. The 5-night Explorer mirrors the Hopper route, whilst the 3-night options go from Msikaba–Mbotyi (17–19 km hike days) or Mbotyi–Manteku (shorter hike days, 4–13 km), making the latter ideal for families or mixed-ability groups.

All trails are led by a highly experienced local Pondo guide, ensuring you discover the secret waterfalls, cultural landmarks, and the hidden treasures of this coastal gem. Whether fully supported or self-catered, these trails offer an authentic opportunity to explore Pondoland’s rich heritage and remarkable natural beauty
