Northern Berg’er MTB Tour

Just 3.5 hours from Johannesburg or Durban, Active Escape’s Northern Berg’er offers a lodge-to-lodge, fully catered and supported — yet self-guided — mountain biking adventure. Ride hand-crafted single-track trails through breathtaking mountain scenery, from the Tugela River plains up to 1800m under the towering Drakensberg peaks — as close to true high-berg riding as it gets.

The journey begins (or ends) with an overnight at Cavern Hotel in the Tugela Valley, before pedalling your way up to Drak Mountain Inn. Daily rides range from 30–45 km, with optional loops for those wanting to extend or shorten their mileage.

At Drak Mountain Inn, spend a second day exploring on foot or at leisure, letting the breathtaking mountain vistas sink in. Hike over sandstone cliffs to visit a Cape Vulture colony, enjoy a guided horse ride, or try fly-fishing in the lodge dams.

On the final day, enjoy a thrilling descent back into the Tugela Valley, taking in more sublime singletrack before returning your rental bikes. You can also opt for a fourth night at Cavern Hotel and treat yourself to a soothing forest spa massage — the perfect way to end an unforgettable mountain biking adventure.
