Amphitheatre Slackpacking Trail
Hike to the Roof of South Africa on our Amphitheatre Slackpacker, following the source of the Tugela River to the top of the world’s highest waterfall. Once the preserve of experienced mountaineers, this guided slackpacking experience lets you enjoy the Drakensberg’s iconic high-berg scenery without the burden of a heavy backpack. All meals are catered for, whilst you overnight in comfortable mountain lodges. Most hikers carry a small overnight pack, as you need little more than your clothing for two days. But for those who prefer to travel even lighter, porters or vehicle luggage transfers can be arranged.
Covering approximately 40 km, the journey begins with an overnight at the charming Cavern Hotel in the Tugela Valley, before ascending to spend two nights at South Africa’s highest mountain lodge — your gateway to the Sentinel and the famous chain ladder climb to the summit.
A mountain guide accompanies you for the first two days, ensuring safety and sharing their knowledge about the region’s geology, flora, and fauna. The third day, is usually self-guided, with an easier descent down the scenic Mahai Valley, into Royal Natal National Park. From there, our transfer returns you to Cavern Hotel, where you can treat yourself to a final night’s stay, or travel home / on to the airport in good time.
This slackpacking trail is ideal for hikers seeking an authentic high-berg adventure with the comfort of overnighting in catered mountain lodges. Just a 3.5-hour drive from Johannesburg or Durban, it’s an ideal long-weekend escape, combining high-altitude hiking, breathtaking scenery, and the unforgettable thrill of standing atop the mighty Amphitheatre.
