Experience the untouched beauty of South Africa’s lower Wild Coast on this easy, fully guided 5 night slackpack hike. Follow wide sandy beaches from Kob Inn to Morgan Bay, staying in charming family-run hotels while local porters carry your luggage. Enjoy scenic coastal trails, lagoons, dune forests, and traditional villages along the way.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival at Kob Inn or East London
Arrive at East London Airport (or via self-drive to Kob Inn) and enjoy a scenic shuttle to your starting hotel. Settle in and meet your guide, who will introduce you to the trail, the porters, and the route ahead. Dinner at the hotel gives you a taste of local cuisine while you soak in your first views of the Wild Coast. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 2 – Kob Inn to Mazeppa
Start the day with a rowboat ferry across the Xora River and walk beneath giant sand dunes. Enjoy your packed lunch on the grassy peninsula where shark fisherman cast their lines before continuing onto Mazeppa Bay for your next night.
Day 3 – Mazeppa to Wavecrest
Start your hike along wide sandy beaches, with coastal dune forests and small lagoons providing a beautiful backdrop. Enjoy a packed lunch on the trail before arriving at your next family-run hotel, where your luggage has been transported by porters.
Day 4 – Wavecrest to Seagulls / Trennerys
Hike further south along the pristine beaches, crossing small river valleys and exploring secluded sections of coastline. Arrive at the next overnight stop mid-afternoon, relax, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and reflect on the day’s walk.
Day 5 – Final Hike Toward Morgan Bay
On your last full day of hiking, traverse the remaining stretches of sandy beaches and coastal forest. Cross over the Great Kei River by means of one of the last operating pontoons in the country and walk through the small village of Kei Mouth. Arrive at Morgan Bay in the late afternoon and overnight at Morgan Bay hotel or seaside apartments.
Day 6 – Morgan Bay and Departure
After breakfast take a short walk up the spectacular Morgan Bay cliffs for whale and dolphin watching (in season). Depending on flight out, or return to Kob Inn, a shuttle transfer will you onto your next destination. Depart with memories of natural wonders, and a historic and culturally rewarding hiking adventure along the Wild Coast.
