Itinerary:
Day 1: Sentinel Car Park to Icidi
Your adventure begins at Sentinel Car Park, where the imposing Sentinel Peak rises dramatically ahead. From here, you start your ascent up the escarpment, reaching an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters as you approach the South Africa–Lesotho border. Along the way, you will navigate the iconic Chain Ladders — a thrilling series of iron rungs embedded into the cliff face, offering spectacular views and an unforgettable hiking experience. As you continue, you’ll be treated to the awe-inspiring sight of the Tugela Waterfall, cascading 948 meters—the tallest waterfall in the world. The trail winds through diverse landscapes including rocky outcrops and alpine vegetation, giving you an immersive introduction to the raw beauty of the Drakensberg. The day covers roughly 15 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 780 meters, culminating in an overnight stay at Icidi where you can relax and reflect on your first day in the mountains.
Day 2: Icidi to Mnweni
Day two presents two significant climbs that challenge and reward in equal measure. You start with the ascent to Fangs Pass, where you’ll encounter the striking rock formation known as Madonna and Her Worshippers, a sacred and photogenic highlight of the area. Continuing upward, you reach the Hanging Valleys—a stunning spot to pause and enjoy a scenic lunch while soaking in panoramic views over Mnweni. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including towering peaks, caves, and South Africa’s longest and largest river system. The trail passes through a mix of grasslands and rock-strewn paths, offering glimpses of indigenous flora and fauna unique to this high-altitude region. Your overnight stop in Mnweni provides comfortable accommodation and the chance to connect with local culture and legends.
Day 3: Mnweni to Twins Cave
Today’s trek takes you through a more secluded section of the Drakensberg. As you pass the area known as the Rockeries, you’ll appreciate the vastness and isolation of the landscape, perfect for quiet reflection. One of the day’s highlights is spotting the impressive Cape Vulture colonies that nest on sheer cliffs—majestic birds that soar gracefully overhead and add to the sense of wilderness. You then enter Cathedral territory, a breathtaking region named for its soaring rock formations reminiscent of cathedral spires. Your day ends at Twins Cave, a popular mountain refuge nestled in a spectacular location. Here you can unwind, enjoy mountain hospitality, and prepare for the final day’s descent. The hike covers approximately 12 kilometers with an ascent of 550 meters.
Day 4: Twins Cave to Cathedral Peak Hotel
On your final day, you’ll tackle a mostly downhill trek that offers a different kind of thrill. Starting with the uMlambonja Pass, you begin a steady descent through the Little 'Berg region. This section of the trail offers stunning views as you gradually lose 1,225 meters of elevation over a distance of around 13 kilometers. The route is peppered with diverse landscapes—ranging from lush valleys to rocky outcrops—and the sense of accomplishment grows as you near the Cathedral Peak Hotel, your final destination. This hotel offers comfort and relaxation, a perfect way to conclude your remarkable Drakensberg adventure. You’ll have time to rest and recount the unforgettable sights and experiences from the past four days before departing or continuing your travels.
