Often referred to as the Mini Traverse, it encompasses the initial five days of the esteemed Grand Traverse, showcasing iconic Drakensberg landmarks such as the Amphitheatre, Tugela Waterfall, and Madonna and Her Worshippers. Undoubtedly, this route is a quintessential Drakensberg adventure.
However, your Drakensberg journey need not be confined to this route alone. We offer scheduled hikes with fixed departure dates on specific routes. Alternatively, if you have a particular route in mind, complete with specific points of interest and your preferred dates, we can accommodate that too. Even if you’re uncertain about the route but eager for a ‘Berg experience, let us craft a hiking route tailored to your preferences. The Mini Traverse is moderately challenging over four days and more relaxed over five days.

Day 1: Drakensberg | Sentinel Car Park to Icidi
The hike kicks off with the imposing Sentinel Peak directly ahead. As you approach the summit of the escarpment, marking the international border between South Africa and Lesotho, you’ll find yourself at an elevation of 3000m. En route, encounter renowned landmarks like the Chain Ladders and the awe-inspiring Tugela Waterfall, standing at an impressive 948m – the world’s highest waterfall. Revel in the sheer grandeur of this magnificent setting!

Day 2: Drakensberg | Icidi to Mnweni
Prepare for two substantial climbs. The first ascends to the Fangs Pass area, with Madonna and Her Worshippers as the focal point. Then, ascend to the Hanging Valleys, where you’ll enjoy lunch with a panoramic view of Mnweni – home to South Africa’s largest and longest river, impressive caves, and legendary peaks.

Day 3: Drakensberg | Mnweni to Twins Cave
Passing the Rockeries, gain perspective on the smallness and isolation of your position. Marvel at Cape Vulture colonies nesting on the cliffs, a definite highlight. As you move beyond the Saddle, you approach Cathedral territory. Spend the night at the ever-popular Twins Cave, a veritable Berg hotel.

Day 4: Drakensberg | Twins Cave to Cathedral Peak Hotel
Tighten those boot laces for a full day of descent. Begin with the uMlambonja Pass and descend the Little ‘Berg. Losing altitude and gazing up at your surroundings evokes a sense of insignificance.
