Jet Skiing in South Africa.

Jet skiing is a fun way to ride waves with the wind in your hair, spray hitting your skin and the feeling of pure freedom and exhilaration coursing through your veins. The sheer bliss of skipping across the ocean’s surface is an incredible experience for adults and teenagers, especially since it can be learned quite easily.

Riding a jet ski is fairly simple although certain safety precautions must be adhered to. Generally you will be advised to attach the engine shut-off clip to your wrist before starting the motor, just in case you are thrown from the jet ski. You can then switch on the ignition, place both hands on the handlebars and slowly engage the throttle. When close to the dock or shore, you should keep your speed at trolling (the lowest level), which is usually 10mph or less and will not cause much wake. Practice doing turns at this speed to get used to the weight and manoeuvrability of the jet ski. Stay closer to shore away from boats, surfers and other jet skiers.

Once you have gained confidence you can start increasing your speed so the nose is raised slightly above the water. This will create a small wake – keep in mind that some water will spray over you as you enter choppier conditions. You should always approach waves and wakes from the front. Depending on your speed, the jet ski may be lifted into the air; lift yourself off the seat slightly to lessen the impact when you hit the water again.

While you are still becoming comfortable with the jet ski you should refrain from trying tricks and complicated manoeuvres. Stay within the designated area for personal watercraft as swimmers and boats will typically be restricted from entering the perimeters thereof. It is imperative that you always wear a life jacket as this will act as your personal floatation device and will keep you from sinking beneath the waves, especially if you are injured. But just because you remain sensible while riding does not mean that your experience will be boring. Our affiliate jet ski instructors will safely introduce you to this exhilarating holiday activity.
