Combining luxury and adventure, the Green and Blue Mountain Trails are
slackpacking experiences deep in the heart of the UNESCO-designated Kogelberg
Biosphere, home to 1 880 identified plant species. Food, wine, and luxury farm
stays are intertwined into a day’s walking allowing time for relaxation and
recuperation. It is a perfect way to experience what the Overberg has to offer.
The 3- and 4-day Blue Mountain (45 km) and Green Mountain (55 km) slackpacking
trails are perfect for the luxury adventure seeker. Accredited, passionate, and
knowledgeable guides take hikers through wilderness, vines, fruit farms, and
protected fynbos, around the northern or southern sides of the Elgin Valley —
dependent on the trail option booked. The Blue Mountain Trail offers dramatic
views of the coastline, while both trails include bountiful displays of indigenous
bird, animal, and plant life. Newly launched in 2024, Green Mountain LITE (Lower
in Total Effort), gives the opportunity to enjoy four days of all the added benefits of
our trail experiences with less intense hiking routes.
Trails are hosted at the picturesque four-star graded Wildekrans Country House
– a destination in its own right – whose homestead brings together contemporary
South African art, history, and country living in a most unique way. Attention to
detail makes a huge difference on these trails; special requirements are catered for,
and only small groups (of up to 10) are hosted each week. As these are working
farm experiences, hiking commences on Mondays, with lunches in the mountain
fynbos, or on local wine farms. Trails include wine tastings on the Elgin and Bot
River wine routes. Two-day Weekend Walking is also offered.
A moderate level of fitness is required.
