Abseiling in Rustenburg, South Africa.
Rustenberg in North West Province is not all about Platinum mines, there’s a growing adventure activity industry there inspired by the town’s proximity to the rugged Magaliesberg Mountains. Wild summer thunderstorms have sent rivers racing off the escarpment for millennia. These have carved out deep gorges in its ancient rock bed, forming spectacular cliffs. These walls of rock lure climbers from all over South Africa and, more recently, have provided adventure operators in Rustenberg with the perfect location for the exciting activity of abseiling.
Qualified adventure guides will take you into these stunning places and, after being kitted out in safety gear and receiving a little instruction, have you abseiling off the edge of the cliffs. The control of your descent can be taken over at anytime by your guides, should you have a fear-wobbly and you’ll be safely lowered down to terra firma. But most people get the hang of it straight away and after you’ve recovered from the first adrenalin pumping lean-back over the cliff, you’ll be swinging and leaping your way down the rock in exhilaration, enjoying the views as you go.
