The Wupperthal66 – Slackpacking Adventure in the Cederberg Mountains

Venture deep into the heart of the Cederberg Mountains with the Wupperthal66 Hike, a four-day slackpacking trail that covers 66 km of rugged beauty. This unique route, launched in 2022, was created through a partnership between Live the Journey and the Wupperthal community, offering hikers access to some of South Africa’s most remote and untouched wilderness.

The adventure begins near Wupperthal, a village often called the Jewel of the Cederberg. Time seems to stand still here, with its rich history, distinctive culture, and breathtaking natural surroundings. From this base, hikers embark on a journey that blends dramatic rock formations, ochre valleys, and deep canyons with the warm hospitality of local support teams.

The Wupperthal66 is more than just a point-to-point trek—it’s an immersive experience. Camps are carefully set up in remote locations, two of which are accessible only by 4x4, ensuring a true wilderness feel. Despite the logistical challenges, hikers can expect excellent service, hearty meals, and a supportive team dedicated to making the journey unforgettable.

Each day offers a new challenge and new scenery. Trails range from single tracks and gravel roads to rocky sections that require sure footing. While the hike is not considered extreme, participants should be reasonably fit, prepared for steep ascents and descents, and equipped with good hiking shoes. One particularly memorable day includes a 6 km steady climb for a few km with a demanding 400-500 m incline—but the panoramic views make every step worthwhile.

Designed for groups of 12 to 24 hikers, the Wupperthal66 balances the camaraderie of shared adventure with the solitude of wide-open mountain spaces. It’s a chance to explore an untamed corner of South Africa, discover hidden gems, and connect with both nature and community.
