The Wupperthal100 Hike – Ultimate Adventure in the Cederberg Mountains

Launching in 2025, the Wupperthal100 is a 6-day, 100 km slackpacking hike that combines the routes of the Wupperthal66 and the Wupperthal Cedar Trail. Designed for hikers seeking a bigger challenge, this route ventures deep into one of South Africa’s most unspoilt wilderness areas. As part of the Greater Cederberg, it showcases dramatic rock formations and even leads through terrain no hiker has accessed before.

One night is spent at Heuningvlei Backpackers, close to the cedar nursery and plantation. Here, you’ll learn about the monumental effort to restore the endangered Clanwilliam cedar and see first-hand the work being done to give this species a fighting chance. Along the way, you’ll also encounter the warm hospitality of Wupperthal communities, sampling traditional bread, vetkoek, and roosterkoek to complement the hearty meals prepared daily by the support team.

The Wupperthal Hikes are not only about nature but also culture. They serve as custodians of two cherished traditions — the Riel dancers and the brass band — both vital in keeping community heritage alive, particularly among the youth. Guests on the Wupperthal100 will have the privilege of experiencing both during the journey.

This is truly more than just a hike. With only one departure per year and limited spots, the Wupperthal100 offers an exclusive chance to be part of an adventure unlike any other. Each day promises unique charm, shifting landscapes, and unforgettable encounters in the heart of the Cederberg.
