The Northern Horse - Horse Riding in the Drakensberg, South Africa.

The Northern Horse offers amazing horse-riding adventures in the Northern Drakensberg of KZN, South Africa. A natural herd of 16 free-range, horses roam the Montusi Estate, where our stables are based. 

The Northern Horse is a horse-focused operation.  Happy horses make for happy riders. These strong and healthy mountain horses take guests of all abilities up mountains, across the plains and over rivers to find the most breath-taking views of the Amphitheatre and Little Berg range; secret caves with bushman paintings and stunning rivers for wild swims.

We have trails suitable for everyone: kids and beginners enjoy the gentle 1 hour trail, over-looking the Puterill’s River and the Montusi Waterfall (in summer).  The 2 hour trail offers a little more excitement in that it goes up onto the Montusi Ridge where the views are even more special and the riding is a little more technical.  For more experienced riders, the longer rides offer more opportunities for canters and technical ascents and descents.

The area where we ride is unlimited so the adventures can last for days!  The overnight rides are very popular as they horses take you far into the mountains to stay in beautiful accommodation, away from the rest of the world.

The guides are very informative and offer instruction during the outing to improve the guest experience.  Their knowledge of the local area and people makes for an interesting trip.

In this time of social distancing, you won’t find a better activity than horse-riding!

Safety of guests and horses if a top priority: tack and horses are checked daily for damage and injury; guides are well trained in guest relations and first aid; Covid protocols are in place, and the ride is managed is such a way as to keep riders on top of horses.
