The Griqualand Express – Southern Berg Wonder Slackpacking Trail

Step into the wild beauty of the Southern Drakensberg with the Griqualand Express Slackpacking Trail, also known as the Southern Berg Wonder. This 4-day, all-inclusive journey combines scenic hiking with cultural discovery, warm hospitality, and the comfort of luxury accommodation.

The adventure begins at Flitwick Ranch, where guests are welcomed with drinks, snacks, and dinner in the Deli overlooking the countryside. Over the next three days, hikers cover approximately 60 km through ever-changing landscapes, with each stage offering something remarkable.

On Day 2, the trail leads into the Ntsekeni Nature Reserve, South Africa’s highest vlei and a RAMSAR wetland site of international importance. Here, hikers will enjoy lunch in a cave adorned with ancient San rock paintings, before continuing to the Ntsekeni Community Lodge. This reserve is a haven for birders, offering sightings of rare species such as the White-winged Flufftail and Short-tailed Pipit.

Day 3 features a challenging but rewarding hike to the Rooipoort Waterfall, where hikers can cool off in crystal-clear pools before climbing into the mountains for sweeping views of the Southern Berg. That night, enjoy an authentic boerekos dinner and a hot bath prepared in a steel tub with water heated by a donkey boiler—an experience that echoes the charm of the 1880s.

On Day 4, the route meanders back toward Flitwick Ranch, with a picnic stop in flower-filled meadows. The final evening is celebrated with a farewell dinner and one last night of comfort.
