Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers – Guided Walking Tours in the Heart of Soweto

Experience Soweto on foot with Lebo’s — where walking the streets means walking through living history. Rooted in the vibrant Orlando West community, Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers offers day and overnight guests an authentic, personal connection to the people, culture, and stories of South Africa’s most iconic township.

Our relaxed guided walking tours take you deep into the soul of Soweto. Stroll past key historical landmarks while discovering the rich diversity of its streets and neighbourhoods. Along the way, learn local lingo, exchange greetings with residents, and experience township life up close.

Visit the former men’s hostel in Mzimhlope to hear powerful stories of mine workers and the harsh conditions they once endured. Pay your respects at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, commemorating the brave students of the 1976 uprising. Walk down Vilakazi Street — the only street in the world that has housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates — Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The walk ends with a refreshment stop at a local shebeen before returning to Lebo’s for a well-deserved traditional lunch in the Outdoor Restaurant.

This is more than a tour — it’s a cultural exchange, a chance to slow down and connect.
