Baviaans Camino – A Multi-Day Hiking Pilgrimage in the Eastern Cape
Experience one of South Africa’s most inspiring multi-day hiking journeys on the Baviaans Camino, a 95 km trail that winds through the rugged beauty of the Baviaanskloof and Kouga Mountains. Designed for hikers seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a connection with nature, this Camino offers a blend of physical challenge, breathtaking scenery, and cultural immersion across the Eastern Cape’s unspoilt landscapes.
The journey begins in Willowmore, where pilgrims gather before setting out into the wilds. The first day immediately engages with a steep 5 km climb of 450 m up the Baviaanskloof Mountains, rewarding hikers with sweeping views over the Karoo before descending into lush kloofs to reach Joachimskraal Farm.
Day two leads walkers across the Kouga Mountains, testing stamina with three challenging ascents and revealing hidden natural wonders along the way. A rustic wilderness lunch adds a memorable pause, and the route continues to Entkraal, known for its scenic beauty and warm hospitality.
The third day offers a gentler pace through Kortkloof, a botanist’s paradise rich with cycads, proteas, and aloes. Pilgrims arrive at Mooigedacht Farm, where a honeybush tea tasting and a display of skilled sheep herding by a champion Border Collie provide unique local experiences.
The final stage, the longest at 32 km, crosses rivers, valleys, and kloofs before culminating at Nguniland Guest Farm near Kareedouw. Along the Camino, hikers experience the profound beauty of the Eastern Cape, forging a sense of connection with the landscape and fellow pilgrims, while each day is marked by reflection, discovery, and achievement.
The Baviaans Camino is more than a hike—it is a true pilgrimage, combining physical challenge with moments of introspection and wonder. Every step offers the chance to immerse yourself in South Africa’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and the timeless joy of walking with purpose.
