Hiking on the Garden Route is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in South Africa’s natural splendour. Step off the N2 and you’ll quickly see why this region has become a premier hiking destination, with trails that wander through forests, along rugged coastlines, and across beaches where the only footprints are your own.
The Tsitsikamma National Park is a hiker’s paradise, famed for its indigenous forests, rocky shores, and the legendary five-day Otter Trail – one of the most celebrated hikes in the country. If carrying a heavy pack isn’t for you, the Dolphin Trail offers a lodge-to-lodge experience that still showcases the beauty of the Tsitsikamma coast. Further west, the Oystercatcher Trail traces the untouched beaches of Mossel Bay all the way to the mouth of the Gouritz River.
Many of these longer trails can be enjoyed in smaller sections as day hikes, making them accessible to families and casual walkers. Whether you’re chasing solitude, birdwatching, or simply quality time with friends, hiking on the Garden Route provides it all.
So lace up, breathe in the fresh ocean and forest air, and get those boots dirty – adventure awaits on every path of the Garden Route.
