Remarkable bridges are a reoccurring feature of the Garden Route. The geology of the area was a great challenge for bridge builders throughout the 20th century; large bodies of inland water, plunging gorges, mountains- all needed to be traversed resulting in some notable structures.

Some of the most impressive of them, including the Bloukrans Bridge which is the highest bridge in Africa, have been made safe for walking across on foot. This is a fantastic dual function that is also a worthwhile way to survey the land and facilitates the best (and scariest!) position to observe some of the other activities that make use of these bridges like bungee jumping and bridge swinging.

Bridge walking gives you a chance to enjoy the hallmark of the Garden Route- its ancient indigenous forests. From this vantage point you can see the oldest and mightiest yellow wood trees break through the undulating green canopy in their quest for the light.
