Surfing South Africa (SSA): Official Governing Body of Surfing in South Africa

Surfing South Africa (SSA) is the officially recognized governing body for the sport of surfing in South Africa. Affiliated with both the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and World Surf League (WSL) through Surfing International, SSA is responsible for overseeing all aspects of surfing development, regulation, and representation across the country.

SSA governs a wide range of disciplines, including shortboard, longboard, bodyboarding, kneeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and adaptive surfing. From grassroots programs to elite competitive circuits, SSA ensures that surfers at every level are supported and that events are run according to internationally accepted standards.

One of SSA’s core functions is to organize and sanction national and provincial competitions, providing a clear path for talented surfers to progress from local heats to the global stage. Through structured leagues, coaching frameworks, and performance monitoring, SSA nurtures future champions while promoting inclusivity and access to the sport.

SSA is also committed to the growth of surfing in underrepresented communities. Through initiatives like the Surfing South Africa Transformation and Development Program, the organization actively introduces young people to surfing, particularly in coastal regions where opportunities may be limited.

In addition to athlete development, SSA plays a regulatory role—accrediting surf schools, coaches, and judges, and ensuring that surf-related businesses adhere to safety and operational guidelines. It also engages in environmental advocacy, promoting ocean stewardship as a core value of the surfing lifestyle.
