11 km from George, Wilderness is the first town you come to where you realize why this 200 km scenic drive is called The Garden Route. Nestled amongst thickly wooded hills, startlingly green and verdant, and flanked by one of South Africa’s largest lake systems, Wilderness - as its name suggests - is a nature-lovers paradise. Wave action generates tendrils of sea mist that hangs above endless golden beaches. The flood plain of the Touws River forms a series of picturesque lakes, the distinguishing feature of Wilderness. The Outeniqua Mountains, mauve in the distance, completes the perfect frame. Rare jewel coloured birds flash amongst the creeper-draped trees- over 300 species of birds have been identified here-and pods of dolphins are often spotted frolicking in the surf.

With this abundance of unspoilt nature, Wilderness is a wonderful base for outdoor adventurers, nature lovers and thrill seekers. Whether you enjoy the beauty from above while enjoying a tandem paragliding flight or from below as you penetrate the cliff sided labyrinths of rivers and waterfalls in a canoe, Wilderness is a place where your adventure dreams can come true.
