Adventures at Loskop Dam

Loskop Dam is an adventure destination in Mpumalanga where rugged mountains, deep kloofs, rivers, cliffs and bushveld come together around one of the province’s most scenic dams. Located between Middelburg and Groblersdal, the area offers plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and explore the landscape on foot, in the water or from above.

For adventure seekers, kloofing is one of the most exciting ways to experience the area. Routes through the surrounding kloofs can involve rock hopping, scrambling, river crossings, rock pools and sections through narrow, rugged terrain. The Hels River area is particularly suited to adventurous exploration, with trails following the river towards its meeting point with the Olifants River. Some routes are graded as very difficult and are best suited to experienced hikers or guided groups.

Hiking around Loskop Dam provides another way to discover the region. Trails pass through mountainous terrain and bushveld, with views across the dam, rocky cliffs, waterfalls and river valleys. The landscape is also home to interesting plant and animal life, including rare cycads, antelope and a variety of bird species.

There is plenty beyond hiking and kloofing. Adventure operators in the area offer activities such as ziplining and abseiling, while the wider Loskop Dam area is popular for fishing, boating, game viewing, walking and other outdoor pursuits. One local zipline experience features seven lines stretching approximately 1.4 km, while abseiling is available from cliffs of up to 28 metres.

Whether you are looking for an adrenaline-filled kloofing adventure, a challenging hike or a relaxed outdoor escape surrounded by nature, Loskop Dam offers an exciting base for exploring Mpumalanga’s rugged Highveld landscape.
