Caving in Sudwala Caves

Imagine a system of caves, over 30 kilometres long, dating back 3 000 million years to a time when the highveld separated from Mpumalanga’s lowveld, allowing water to slowly trickle and form a series of passages through the rocks.

Legend says that Sudwala Caves were the stronghold of Somquba, son of Swazi King Sobhuza I who fled from his brother Mswati II. In the power struggle for the Swazi throne, bloody battles were fought at the cave entrance. After Sobhuza’s death, the new leader Sudwala became head of the tribe and also the namesake of the caves.

Today, you can go Caving in the Sudwala Caves and explore the chambers studded with giant stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations.
