Swift Water Rescue Course – Be Prepared to Help Your Team

If you spend time paddling rivers recreationally, a Swift Water Rescue Course is an essential next step in your river skills journey. This course, specifically designed for recreational users—whether you're in a kayak, croc, or part of an adventure race team—equips you with the tools to respond effectively when things go wrong on moving water. The focus isn’t on becoming a river guide, but rather on being a responsible, capable member of your paddling group. You’ll learn how to spot potential hazards before they become problems, how to manage emergencies, and most importantly, how to keep yourself safe so you can help others when needed. The course promotes leadership, self-awareness, and calm decision-making under pressure.

Training takes place on the Vaal River near Parys in the Free State—just over an hour from Johannesburg—and can also be arranged on other rivers across Southern Africa. The program runs over a weekend, starting Saturday morning and wrapping up by Sunday afternoon. Campsites with river views, electricity, and hot showers are included. Courses are capped at 16 participants for hands-on attention. Instructors are APA and Resuscitation Council-registered professionals with extensive experience in river rescue. You’ll need your own gear in good condition, but equipment rentals can be arranged in advance. Whether you're planning multi-day river trips or racing against the clock, this course gives you the confidence and skills to paddle with purpose and safety.
