The Donkey Trail – Gamkaskloof (Die Hel), South Africa
The Donkey Trail is a 30 km, fully guided and catered hike through the breathtaking Gamkaskloof Valley, famously known as Die Hel. Spanning three nights and two full hiking days, this immersive experience offers both adventure and cultural insight, making it a must for hikers seeking something truly unique in South Africa.
Originally established as a community development and animal rescue initiative, the trail is now a celebrated journey for both local and international hikers. Trained guides from the local community accompany participants throughout, sharing fascinating historical and cultural stories about the former inhabitants of Die Hel. Donkeys, integral to the region’s heritage, carry all hiking gear to the first night’s tented camp, allowing hikers to enjoy the trek unburdened.
The trail follows one of the original footpaths used by Gamkaskloof residents and traverses a UNESCO World Heritage Site within one of the world’s 35 biodiversity hotspots. Hikers encounter stunning geological formations, pristine mountain pools, and diverse flora and fauna, while enjoying high-quality, locally sourced meals catered by Aloe Aloe Restaurant in Groenfontein. Trail snacks, biodegradable soaps, and shampoos are provided.
Accommodation is a highlight of the experience: the first night in Cape Vernacular cottages dating back to the 1820s, the second night in an exclusive luxury tented site atop the Swartberg Mountains, and the final night in beautifully restored “klowers” cottages on Cape Nature’s property.
The trail operates year-round except during February, July, and August due to extreme weather. Groups are limited to 6–10 hikers, ensuring an intimate and personalized adventure, with vehicle transfers at the end of the trail for convenience.
