Long Tom Toboggan – Misty Mountain Mpumalanga
Get ready for the ride of your life on Africa’s longest toboggan track! Misty Mountain’s Long Tom Toboggan winds and whooshes its way down the scenic Long Tom Pass near Sabie in Mpumalanga. With a 1.7-kilometre steel track designed on the principles of the famous European alpine coaster, this thrilling adventure lets you twist and turn through grasslands, wildflowers, and pine forests at speeds of up to 45 km/h.
Opened in 2016, the Long Tom Toboggan is the first of its kind in South Africa. Developed and built over two years, it showcases both innovation and care for the environment. The track meanders down Misty Mountain’s 280-hectare Natural Heritage Site, designed with minimal clearing to preserve the breathtaking beauty of the Lowveld. Safety has been meticulously prioritised, with each of the 328 steel sections tested and double-checked before welcoming riders.
This is an adventure for all ages, suitable for families, groups, and thrill seekers. Children aged 7/8 and older may ride solo, provided they are strong enough to operate the brake lever. With a weight limit of 120 kg and strict safety guidelines, everyone can enjoy the experience with peace of mind.
The adrenaline rush lasts just three minutes — but once you’ve raced down the mountain, you’ll want to do it again (and again). Whether you’re a local explorer or an international visitor, the Long Tom Toboggan is an unmissable Mpumalanga adventure activity.
