Hiking in KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.
KwaZulu-Natal offers a wide variety of hikes and with all the spectacular scenery and wildlife on offer, choosing the best hiking trail is neigh impossible. However, here are some suggestions for great hikes:
The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towering sandstone cliffs, crystal clear rivers and giant peaks welcome you to this hiker’s paradise. San rock art is present in hundreds of caves. The park is also a rich wildlife sanctuary and is home to many rare and endangered animals.
From the majestic Amphitheatre to the Tugela Falls and picturesque foothills, the Drakensberg provides the perfect environment for hiking.
Another KwaZulu-Natal UNESCO World Heritage Sites is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Hiking here involves traversing lakes, walking along deserted beaches and snorkelling among the thousands of fish species that live in the clear waters of this protected area.
In the summer months, loggerhead turtles waddle ashore to lay their eggs. Listen out for the cry of the African fish eagle and spot a humpback whale on its migratory route to Mozambique. Spot monkeys, bushbuck and the rare palm nut vulture in the coastal forest.
For unique biodiversity head to the Dhlinza forest in Eshowe, Zululand. A boardwalk winds through the forest canopy and allows you the perfect bird’s eye view.
