How to find the perfect adventure for your group

“Put your left leg through here” beckons the guide as he directs you into a full body climbing harness. You glance left and smile nervously at your daughter as she adjusts the buckles on her helmet. Excitement builds, but you’re still not sure if this will turn out to be the adventure you wanted?

It was admittedly a bit of a last-minute decision, a google search while you were waiting for your breakfast order. So, what else could you have done to make sure you chose the right adventure and more importantly, the right adventure operator?

Choose an adventure that suits the abilities of your entire group. If everyone wants to participate then you should ideally use the weakest person in your group as the gauge.

There are so many adventure activities in South Africa that it is often hard to choose whether you next experience should be across land, water or air. Adventure means “an unusual, exciting or daring experience”. So, choose an activity that’s new and different, one that most of the group have not done before. Select an activity in a place you’ve never been to before. 

Adventures come in all sizes. Don’t disappoint your team when a quick adventure ends earlier than you wanted, and don’t take an under prepared group on a really long adventure that they may not be ready for. Manage expectations by ensuring you have the facts and have communicated them to your group.

Choose the right adventure operator! A good operator will have everything in place to take you on an exciting new adventure providing memories for life. Inherent in an adventure is the risk factor, that’s what makes it an adventure. A reputable operator will give you a sense of personal safety and confidence that your family will have the best supervision by the best professionals regardless of the risks involved. How do you find this person or company?

Check their references. How is their online presence? What do the recent reviews say? How is it rated within the local area? What does your hotel say about them? Have any of your friends been there? In this hyper connected world, it is always easy to do a bit of research.

Is the booking process quick and easy? How well and politely do they respond when contacted? If customer service isn’t very good at the beginning don’t be surprised if the guides on the activity are not trained to provide you with the best experience either.

Any good adventure activity will have a proud selection of authentic original pictures and videos that will give you an idea of what their adventure environment and experience will involve. If you aren’t able to easily access a few good visuals when trying to choose, its likely to mean you won’t see many on your trip.

Are they members of any local adventure associations for their industry? These associations will generally have a set of rules and standards in place that help adventure companies keep up with best practices and ensuring a safe enjoyable environment for adventure. Don’t hesitate to ask to see your guides or operators certificates of competencies, insurances or even company registration to reassure you that they’re legit.

If you’ve done the research, planned your trip well and communicated with your fellow adventurers then there’s nothing else to worry about. You can lean over to give your daughter a high five, and shout, “Let’s do this!”
