South Africa’s Perfect Slackpacking Escape
The leisure activity of slackpacking has grown exponentially since Covid, when, or so it seemed, after being imprisoned for a few months, everyone suddenly discovered ‘hiking’. Since then, a growing number of areas have been identified as possible slackpacking destinations. If it’s a beautiful rural or nature rich place that intersects with good access for transport and decent accommodation, it’s ready to be crafted into a slackpacking trail. Picking through these incredible options and choosing one to recommend is a hard task indeed.

So, I’m going to go back to my roots and recommend a classic. A hike that combines all things that a good slackpacking adventure should offer; spectacular scenery, charming accommodation and cultural intrigue. As a child we walked the Wild Coast for days. There precious memories might be tinged with the embellishments of a magical of childhood, but recently I’ve had so many people asking me if I’ve ever done the Wild Coast slackpacking trip these paradisical images have been evoked. What strikes me is the look on their faces when they ask me; so utterly smitten by their recent adventure-as though they just discovered some secret corner of the world they can’t quite believe exists.
They’re right to look smug and elated. There can be few spots more perfect for slackpacking then the Wild Coast.

The weather is mild, the topography is gentle, the water is warm, the scenery can be astounding; think waterfalls dropping over plateaus straight into the sea. The rural traditional feel adds a whole other layer; Nguni cattle on the beach, thatched rondavels on the hills, a faded pink spaza shop selling coke. With accommodation in charming old-school hotels or rustic eco-lodges where you’ll find your luggage magically appear at the end of your walking day, you’re all set for a holiday that is the perfect balance between relaxation and good daily exercise.
