Whale Watching on the Cape Peninsula

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay, the peninsula offers a variety of places to look for whales, from dramatic coastal viewpoints to boat trips that take you out onto the water.

The Cape Peninsula forms part of the Western Cape’s whale-watching coastline, with Southern Right whales returning to coastal waters during their annual migration. The main whale-watching season is generally from June to November, although sightings can occur outside these months. Humpback whales also migrate through Cape waters, while Bryde’s whales can be found in the region throughout the year.

Hout Bay is one of the peninsula’s best starting points for a boat-based marine adventure. From Hout Bay Harbour, trips head into the waters around the western side of the peninsula, where whales may be encountered alongside dolphins, Cape fur seals and other marine life. The coastline itself is spectacular, with views of Chapman’s Peak, the Twelve Apostles and rugged cliffs along the Atlantic coast.

On the eastern side of the peninsula, False Bay provides further opportunities for whale watching. Elevated viewpoints around Cape Point, Simon’s Town, Boyes Drive and Kalk Bay offer chances to spot whales from land during the season. Table Mountain National Park also highlights Chapman’s Peak Drive and other elevated viewpoints as good locations for whale spotting.

Whether you choose a boat trip from Hout Bay or search the coastline from one of the peninsula’s scenic viewpoints, whale watching offers a memorable way to experience Cape Town’s marine environment. Sightings are never guaranteed because whales are wild animals, but the combination of spectacular scenery and abundant ocean life makes the Cape Peninsula an exceptional destination for marine wildlife encounters.
