In their search for the sea, the rivers that run off the great Tsitsikama mountain range just northwest of Plettenberg Bay, have formed magnificent deep dark gorges which are now accessible through the sport of kloofing and are like natures very own adventure theme park.
In the early days of the sport, kloofing was the preserve of a few extreme adventurers with solid rock climbing skill. Now, under the supervision of highly trained adventure guides anyone (from the age of 8) who is reasonably fit can take part in this exhilarating activity which involves making your way down cliff sided rivers by navigating waterfalls and pools, wearing wetsuits, helmets and sometimes special water-shoes and, when its required, using techniques like abseiling.
Kloofing or canyoning epitomises what adventure sport is all about-facilitating not just an adrenalin rush but a sense of discovery and wonderment as you explore, by leaping, abseiling, swimming and rock hopping, these pristine gorges near Plettenberg Bay.
