Fly Fishing in South Africa. Where can I fly fish in SA?
Fly fishing is a specific method of fishing using specialised hooks, rods and line. Originally fly fishing was the technique employed when catching trout and salmon, but today it used when fishing for bass, pike, panfish, grayling and carp, among others, as well as certain types of salt-water fish.
Whether you plan to relax for a few hours, or are embarking on a longer fly fishing trip, there are literally thousands of rivers, lakes, dams, and even certain spots along the coast, where you can indulge in your favourite sport. Certain river spots are specially stocked with trout and/or salmon, almost guaranteeing your chance of catching a fish.
If you are interested in fly fishing but have no prior experience, there are a number of schools and training facilities that offer beginner courses. If you have some experience but feel that you need a little reminding, then a refresher course can help you to get back in the game. Training facilities will usually have their own equipment for you to use during the course, which can be a good way for you to learn which the correct tools are before purchasing your own equipment. If you would rather hire than buy equipment, the training facility can hire out theirs or inform you of places that will rent out equipment.
There are also specialised fly fishing camps, where you can be trained by some of South Africa’s top fly fishermen and guides. Camp sites are rustic, set in beautiful surrounds, and are usually fully catered. With all fly fishing gear provided, and food and accommodation sorted, all you have to do is arrive and enjoy.
If you are worried about the impact that fly fishing has on the environment, then be advised that there are tours that will take you to eco-friendly trout and bass lakes. Likewise, employ the catch and release system, but make sure that you do it properly otherwise the fish will die - rendering your good intentions meaningless.
Whether you prefer fresh or salt water fishing, rapidly flowing rivers or calm lakes, there is no shortage of places to enjoy fly fishing adventure tours in South Africa.
