Archery fun in the Sabie River Valley
Archery has quietly become one of the Sabie River Valley's most popular group activities, and it's easy to see why. Tucked between Hazyview and Sabie, in the same stretch of forest and farmland that draws rafters, quad bikers and hikers to this corner of Mpumalanga, a handful of local adventure operators run guided archery sessions that need zero experience to enjoy — just a willingness to aim, laugh, and try again.
Most sessions follow a similar format: a short introduction to stance, grip and release using standard long-bows, followed by target practice with unlimited arrows so nobody's session ends after a handful of shots. Guides do more than just hand over a bow, too — expect friendly scoring games and challenges layered in, turning what could be a static lesson into something closer to a proper contest between friends, family or colleagues. Sessions typically run 30 minutes to an hour and work well for small groups of up to around five at a time, with most operators running them daily.
What makes the valley such a good setting for it is the surrounding scenery — ranges are set against forest, farmland and the sound of the nearby Sabie River, a world away from a sterile indoor range. It's a genuinely all-ages activity: young children can have a go under guidance, teenagers tend to get competitive fast, and adults often find it's harder — and more satisfying — than it looks.
Archery is also a favourite for corporate team building in the area, since it rewards focus and patience while giving colleagues an easy, low-pressure way to cheer each other on. Most operators offer it as a standalone activity or as part of a combo day alongside quad biking, rafting, tubing or paintball — making it a great way to slow the pace down between bigger adrenaline hits.
