On the West Coast, South Africa, between the towns of Elands Bay, Lambert’s Bay and Doringbaai you will find superb hiking and slackpacking opportunities.
The Crayfish Trail Company showcases the best of what the West Coast has to offer. We have developed a series of overnight hiking trails for you to choose from. Our trails are in the ‘slackpack’ format to ensure our guests are able to spend time enjoying the scenery and activities along the route, without worrying about carrying your luggage. All our trails include accommodation, food, a guide and transport.
There are a number of different routes from which to choose. These include the Five Day Trail which covers a total distance of 61 km over 4 days of hiking. The shorter Two Day Trails are on average 22 km over a day and a half of hiking – and are perfect for a mid-week or weekend getaway. Both options are suitable for moderately fit families (children over 12). Note that we have a vehicle on standby in the case of an emergency. Our trails are so much more than just hiking. Highlights include: authentic homemade meals, unique wines, historic rock art, Verlorenvlei and the Olifants River Mouth (both of which are protected Ramsar sites, making them wetlands of international importance wetland) and engaging with community members on their culture and about living along this beautiful coast.
The trail covers a range of terrain including beach, jeep track, and single track. You can expect spectacular ocean views from paths above cliffs, insight into the unique coastal vegetation, an abundance of bird life as well as seasonal wildflowers, whales and dolphins. This is an all-year destination in which each season brings its own surprises). The Crayfish Trail links a series of quaint coastal towns and noteworthy farms including: Elands Bay, Steenbokfontein, Lamberts Bay, Doring Bay, Big River Bend and Papendorp. Each has its own unique story and something special to offer the intrepid explorer.
We are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism principles through ensuring activities, meals and guides are locally sourced.
