Karoo Erdvark Trail - Slackpacking

Hiking in the Karoo is not just a walk - it is where you will find your soul.

Karoo Erdvark Trails starts on the farm Rooiheuwel about 80 km west of Beaufort West. This is the heart of the Great Karoo lying on the escarpment of the Nuweveld Mountains with a typical Mountain Karoo Landscape in all directions.

The Karoo is one of the largest Ecosystems in Southern Africa, most of the vegetation and wildlife is endemic to the ecosystem and walking through this landscape you appreciate how the animals and plants have had to adapt to survive.  In this harsh environment it is all about survival.  Keep an eye out while walking for the fast variety of succulents and reptiles that thrive here.

The Erdvark hiking trail is proud member of the Green Flag accredited hiking trails.  There is a network of trails varying in length and difficulty that overnight in a traditional Karoo farmhouse,  7 days could be spent in the area without walking the same path twice.  Rooiheuwel has a variety of different types of accommodation available from camping to a fully furnished maintain chalet.  For further details please visit our website.
