Giants Cup Slackpacking Trail.
The Giants Cup is a marked trail of about 60km in length that runs southwards from Sani Pass in the north to Bushmans Nek in the south. The hiking trail falls within the Southern Drakensberg (a World Heritage Site) which can be easily accessed from the small villages of Underberg and Himeville. Basic hutted accommodation is located at one day hiking intervals. It a relatively easy trail to follow with no great ascents and route markers as white footprints. The trail mostly runs along a contour line just below the Drakensberg skyline so you have wonderful panoramic views of the high peaks as you traverse mainly grassland and incised river valleys with streams coming off the mountainous plateau.
The trail is administered by KZN Wildlife who book the huts for self equipped backpackers who carry everything they need for the 5 night trail. For less hardened ramblers who would like to walk the full trail without the inconvenience of carrying heavy backpacks, SA Adventure Trails have introduced a new concept of “slackpacking” whereby everything is provided for, allowing you to walk the trail during the day and stay in comfortable nearby accommodation at night.
