The town of Ballito is situated north of Durban on the KwaZulu-Natal Coast.
Rising out of what used to be a sugar cane farm, Ballito, on KwaZulu Natal’s North Coast, hits the sweet spot for holiday makers ticking all the boxes for everything you’d want from a holiday town; proximity to airport, gorgeous subtropical climate, hints of exotic from the Asian influence, golden beaches, lots of entertainment and luxurious accommodation.
The endearing bottle nosed dolphin seems to agree that Ballito is the place to be. They love the shallow waters here. It’s probably the best place in South Africa to observe them as they leap and play in the Indian Ocean close to shore. Joining a snorkelling or scuba diving adventure will bring you even closer to these lovable creatures.
Ballito has an ‘endless summer’ vibe about it. Although it is quite developed and offers big shopping centres and wedding cake style beach front apartments (Ballito has experienced exceptional economic growth in recent years), the lifestyle is outdoorsy and relaxed, the golden beaches are pristine, and the surf breaks plentiful. Lifeguards and shark nets add to the safety of the beach. Tranquil tidal pools are popular with families.
For surfers it may be some consolation to know that there are less sharks here than the South Coast. An ice cream and a relaxed stroll along the 4-kilometer promenade provides a chance to absorb the essence of Ballito’s beach culture, enjoy sweeping coastal views all the way to Umhlanga and perhaps even spot whales from July to September.
If you can drag yourself off the beach, countless adventure activities await you both in and around Ballito, including airborne favourites like ziplining and microlight flying.
