Shongweni Game Reserve Adventures near Pietermaritzburg.
Looking for peace and tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of Durban? Shongweni in KwaZulu-Natal is an absolute gem of a nature reserve and, being located just over half an hour away from Durban’s urban edge, an ideal weekend adventure getaway. At 1700 hectares, it is the largest piece of unspoilt natural bush in the Durban area. Its emerald green thickets are home to cycads, orchids and rare succulents and more than 200 species of bird have been recorded. Rocky sandstone ridges break the sea of green and offer a peaceful playground for rock climbers- there are over 100 bolted routes- a climbing paradise.
The beautiful expanse of reed fringed water at the centre of Shongweni game reserve is one of the draw cards of the place. Shongweni is committed to ethical low impact practices which means that only non-motorised boats are allowed on the dam. This fosters a lovely environment for kayaking and fishing, game and bird watching. Guided hikes provide the opportunity to see game like giraffe, waterbuck and impala. Mountain biking is also permitted.
