The EcoQuest Adventure with EcoTraining is perfect for those who have only a week or two to discover and explore Africa’s wilderness. Based at unfenced tented camps in big game wilderness reserves, EcoQuest offers theory and practical learning, sleep-outs and bush survival skills. Leave this fun and educational adventure as an inspired naturalist, with a new approach to the planet.
Days start with an early wake-up to the sound of drumbeats and birdsong, followed by coffee and energy snacks and a morning wilderness walk or game drive. Return for a cooked breakfast and lecture in the open ‘bush classroom’. Lunch is followed by another adventure into the game reserve, on foot or in the vehicle, for nature studies. Relax with sundowners and a night drive. Dinner and campfire time ends an educational and inspirational day.
Lectures and discussions: geology, weather, vegetation and habitats, grasses as a driving force behind savannah ecosystems, food web and energy flow, and current critical conservation issues.
Practical observations and experiences: navigation and orientation (landmarks, sun, compass, maps); animal tracks and tracking; bird identification (by sight and sound) and behaviour (migration, adaptions); animal identification and behaviour (mammals, amphibians, reptiles); common trees and shrubs (identification of prominent species, human and animal utilisation of plants); astronomy of the night sky (stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, Southern Cross, Milky Way), the lunar cycle, constellations and folklore.
Other subjects may include the history and culture of local people, wildlife photography, sensitive 4x4 driving for game viewing, and handling dangerous game encounters.
