White Water Kayaking in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Breede and Berg rivers wind predominantly through farmlands and offer a variety of low-grade rapids alternating with long flat stretches that make you work if you’re in a race but are cruisy if time is your friend. The Palmiet and the Doring rivers take you into wild rugged country with stunning landscapes and incredible flora and generate some fun as well as some pretty serious white water. Cape Town is also the springboard for white-water kayaking trips up country including multi-day trips on the Orange River.
The streams that tumble and fall down Table Mountain in the rainy winter months are too small and too precipitous for kayaking, but head an hour or two out of town to the lofty ranges of the Cape Fold Mountains where huge catchment areas abound, and you’ll find your white water kayaking mecca.
Cape Town’s white water kayaking operators are owned and managed by people who have been in the industry for years and have spent most of their spare time out exploring the wild side, developing expert knowledge, equipment and a high level of competency.
