Slackpacking in Tsitsikamma, South Africa.
Slackpacking (hiking) in this region is a real treat. There are so many enticing options from 20-day Odysseys traversing the Tsitsikamma Mountains to two days rambles along the pristine Tsitsikamma coast. From luxury accommodation to rustic forest huts; all preferences are catered for.
Illustrations of the mythical Garden of Eden in childhood books come to mind when spending time exploring the Tsitsikamma region. The Formosa Peak, the highest peak in the Tsitsikamma range (named, in 1488, by Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias for its beautiful form), gazes down on the loveliest landscape imaginable.
Local field guides will show you the magic of forest and tidal zone, fynbos, and the night sky. You might pass a camera trap, strategically placed to capture a glimpse of the many animals that inhabit this area, like wild boar and bush buck and most importantly the illusive leopard and but there’s also a good chance you’ll spot some of these creatures yourself. You will cool off in fresh dark mountain pools and sparkling coastal ones. Although forest walking tends to be shady and gentle, some of the other terrains in this area can be hot and rugged. Slackpacking will take the bite out of those tougher hiking days.
