A 30-minute drive from Hermanus, Gansbaai is the shark-cage diving capital of the world. Between June and September, migrating great white sharks spend a few months around Dyer Island (15-minutes by boat from Gansbaai), which is home to a colony of Cape fur seals - a great white's favourite meal.
And, you don't need to be in a cage to see the sharks either. Surface viewing from the boat is often better than from the cage, especially in summer months when underwater visibility can be limited.
With high-season during winter months, there's the chance of wind, rain and storms, so keep a few days available to head out when the weather is most favourable.
