Sandboarding in South Africa.

Try one of our operators in Cape Town on the Atlantis Sand Dunes or the Garden Route.

Sandboarding is similar to snowboarding, except that it is done on sand dunes. A person will stand on a board that has been adapted to glide smoothly and easily over sand and then slide down a sand dune. Some people prefer boards that have straps to hold the feet securely in place, while others prefer a board with no restrictions.

Sandboarding trips are usually to desert or coastal areas where there are larger sand dunes. Unlike snowboarding where you are carried to the top of a slope on a ski lift, once you have reached the bottom of a dune you will either have to walk back up to the top of the dune or drive up in a dune buggy or 4x4 vehicle.

One of the attractions of sandboarding is that sand dunes are natural and therefore not weather dependent, so you will be able to ride the dunes all year round. There are also far more sand dunes to be found around the world than there are snow skiing slopes.

Whether found in the desert or at the coast, sand dunes provide a beautiful and dramatic setting to experience the thrill of sandboarding. Sand dunes have been discovered that are up to 2 kilometers in length, making for the ultimate ride down the dunes. But don’t let this stop you - there will be dunes of various heights to accommodate all levels of experience.

The sandboard base is very hard and is usually made from Formica or laminex. Special materials have been developed to strengthen the board, and enable it to glide easily over-sand. Sandboards are also waxed with a paraffin-based sandboard wax to ensure a smoother ride. After a trip down the dune the base of the board may look as though it has been sanded, while some products will give the base of the board a smooth polish after a ride. Customised sandboards can be specially made to order.

Experienced instructors offer sandboarding tuition, staying with you on the dunes to make sure that you stay safe, as well as to show you how sandboarding is done. Book a sand safari trip today, many places offer special rates and group discounts. Try sandboarding for an adrenalin-pumping South African adventure experience.
