Mountain Biking in Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands.
Stellenbosch boasts one of the densest concentrations of quality mountain biking trails in the country, so it’s not surprising that it’s considered the mountain biking capital of South Africa. Beside the endless single track on surrounding mountain ranges many of the wine estates have now had trails designed and built on land not suitable for vineyards. These wind their way through vineyards, fynbos, forest, along riverbanks and up mountains and range from easy family fun routes to those suitable for advanced mountain bikers only.
Capetonians love to go for a ride in the hills of the Stellenbosch Winelands and then treat themselves to a gourmet lunch with their favourite wine afterwards. As a result, most establishments in this area are bike-friendly and many rent out mountain bikes as well.
Stellenbosch has been the host for stages of the famous Cape Epic mountain bike race and the UCI mountain bike world cup and training camps for mountain bikers are offered here. There is even a short obstacle course for real fat tyre enthusiasts to test - and improve - their bike-handling skills.
