Hermanus, situated in the Overberg region on the shores of Walker Bay, is only a 90 minute drive from Cape Town and is one of those places that puts a smile on your face as soon as you arrive. Its intimate village ambiance welcomes all despite its rapid growth in recent years, attributed largely to its superb land and boat-based whale watching opportunities.

Local enthusiasts have dedicated much time and effort in establishing and maintaining MTB trails in Hermanus, so come and enjoy the fruits of their labour and experience mountain biking at its best in one of the most beautiful parts of the country! There are trails suitable for everyone – easier options for beginners and families and more challenging and technical trails for advanced riders.

Fernkloof Nature Reserve in the Klein River Mountains just north of Hermanus offers a 17km circular trail, mostly jeep track with a few single track sections and is shared with hikers.

In the Hemel en Aarde Valley there are four excellent single track MTB trails. Pick up a permit from Euodia Cycles or Wine Village Hermanus then you are all set to go from the starting point in Hemel en Aarde Village. The 6km Green Route is ideal for beginners and youngsters while novices and intermediates will enjoy the hills, stream crossings and stunning vineyard scenery of the 13km Blue Route. Experienced riders can choose from the 28km Red Route with breathtaking viewpoints, fast descents and a portage section, and the challenging 33km Black Route will certainly keep your heart rate up as you ascend to 1000m. Along the way indulge in a bite to eat and some wine tasting and also keep an eye out for whales!

Looking for a multi-day MTB adventure with a difference? Join Cycle Down South on one of their 2 or 3 day MTB trails covering 75 to 130km from Stanford to the Cape Agulhas lighthouse. This excellent slackpacking-style trail is fully supported so all you need to do is ride, admire the spectacular scenery and enjoy overnighting in Witkrans and Wolvengat. The riding group can choose from different trail options making this mountain biking tour perfect for both experienced riders and intermediates with moderate fitness.
