There are amazing mountain bike trails all around South Africa; so you will be spoiled for choice, but nowhere else will you get more rides for your rand than in the sprawling Western Cape region. From the slopes of iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town, windswept beaches and sandstone ranges, the choices here are limitless.
Towards the horizon, the Cape Winelands awaits. An hour's drive towards Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek, you can select from an exhilarating mix of vineyards, fynbos, and rugged mountain trails.
Continue north and you’ll discover the inspiring mountainscapes of the Cederberg and Groot Winterhoek Wilderness area. To the west, the Breede River Valley offers endless dusty gravel roads and in the south, the Overberg unfolds beyond the inland ranges. Here you can saddle up in De Hoop Nature Reserve, one of Cape Nature’s flagship nature reserves.
Conquer the wide-open spaces and arid plains of the Karoo and Little Karoo, then defy gravity on the winding gravel passes of the Swartberg Mountain before entering the picturesque Garden Route, a true mountain biker's heaven. Crank through the tranquil Knysna forests and race along coastal cliffs. There is a mountain bike route for every day of the year in South Africa’s favorite garden.
The Eastern Cape offers a rollicking ride through largely unexplored farmlands. Head further inland to the green forests of Hogsback where you will feel like you have entered straight into a Tolkiensque tale of Middle Earth.
In KwaZulu-Natal hardcore mountain bikers head to the Sani Pass for a challenging day in the saddle. Remember to bring along your passport as you have the option of entering Lesotho. The Drakensberg has plenty of fun rides too, so whether you are a seasoned rider or just starting out, come here for the amazing scenery and great trails.
Tiny but mighty Swaziland is an endless landscape of rolling hills. Here, in the many national parks, you will find outrides for all tastes and abilities. Further north, in Mpumalanga and Limpopo mountain bikers, go for the adrenaline-filled adventure of cycling amongst wildlife in the Kruger National Park or take the more scenic option along the Panorama Route.
City slickers from Gauteng have no need to worry about missing out on all the Mountain Biking Action. Only a short drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria into the Magaliesberg Mountains of North West, and you will find plenty of trails.
