Horse Riding in Tsitsikamma, South Africa.
The forest was once deemed impenetrable by a local governor - only elephants somehow knew how to move through that tangle of green using their ancient secret passages. Now 200 years later, you can explore this wild leafy paradise on horseback. Of course, the mighty forests of the Garden Route are much diminished- the value of the timber hidden there ignited the time of the woodcutters in the 1800’s, but substantial pockets remain, highly protected and still in pristine condition.
Quietly trotting through these species rich afromontane forests, with an expert guide bringing the ghosts of the past alive and pointing out rare fauna and flora, is sure to be a holiday highlight. Horses are chosen for their easy going disposition. From the back of your gentle equine companion you’ll get glimpses of the Tsitsikamma Mountains in the distance and have a good vantage point for trying to spot the tantalizing Knysna loerie and other forest creatures. Outrides can include visits to different animal sanctuaries in the area, as well as wine tasting venues. Shorter farm rides, suitable for the whole family, are also offered.
